Sisters stitch masks for those who can’t buy them
03 April | 2020
Navya Murali, 12 and Nirva Murali, 10, sisters and students of Vidyashilp Academy, have chosen to keep themselves occupied during the lockdown. The siblings stitch masks for those who can’t afford them — pourakarmikas and delivery boys among others — in their neighbourhood in Sadashivanagar The duo spends over four hours every day stitching masks. They have stitched and distributed over 150 masks over the past 10 days.
Navya, a Class 7 student, whose dad gifted her a sewing machine for her birthday in February, has always been passionate about sewing as a craft. “I have seen a lot of workers covering their faces with napkins or saris and realised not everybody can afford masks. So we decided to stitch them. We use cotton cloth and disinfect the masks after stitching,” said Navya. The sisters now make 20 masks every day.
The two work to a fixed schedule. “After breakfast, we get on to the job. We take some breaks in between for meals or play some games,” says Nirva, a Class 5 student.
