Vidyashilp Academy Students Shine at World Scholar Cup 2019

Vidyashilp Academy students were on top of the world when they swept up 400 awards at the prestigious World Scholars Cup (WSC), held at Madras Christian College, Chennai. The young scholars will now compete in the ‘Global Round Challenge 2019’ at Beijing, Astana, Sydney, The Hague, Manila and Durban.

Since its inception in 2007, World Scholar’s Cup has become a much sought after global challenge event which motivates students of all backgrounds to discover new strengths, practice new skills and inspire a global community of future scholars and leaders. A total number of 680 students from 56 schools participated at the event in Chennai. All finalists from all over India and the rest of the world will go for the global round.

The students were divided into two categories – junior and senior. Grades 5 to 12 students within the age group of 11-18 years participated in the event. 26 teams consisting of 77 students took part in the regional round of the competitions. The team of 74 scholars brought laurels to the school by winning around 400 medals which includes individual and team efforts. The regional rounds of this competition comprised of four categories: Scholar’s Challenge, Team Debate, Collaborative Writing and Scholar’s Bowl. Out of 680 participants Ayman Ahmed, a Grade 5 student from the junior group was nominated for the Debate Showcase for his debating and oratory skills.

Speaking on the achievement of the students Mrs. Kalai Selvi, Head of the School, Vidyashilp Academy said, “77 Shilpites walking into the airport with 400 medals individual, group and School trophies chiming after winning is indeed a moment of absolute joy; Small steps taking a leap towards Global stewardship.”

“We, at Vidyashilp Academy, inculcate critical thinking amongst the students from the very start. The curriculum here focuses on the pedagogical study which enables the students to learn from applications and experience, this, in turn, helps with a variety of skill sets required for an equal standing at the global stage,” said Ms. Asha Kanan, Lead Educator and mentor, Vidyashilp Academy.

Founded by Daniel Berdichevsky, the 1st World Scholar’s Cup took place in Korea in 2007; a small regional tournament hosted at the Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies. World Scholar Cup (WSC) focuses on bringing students from different cultures together to discuss issues and ideas pertinent to do with today’s world. This year, the theme of the event was ‘World on the Margin’ which included subjects like unsolved mysteries, on the edge of society, enabling technologies, voices from the margins, neglected histories and louder than words.
